All Star Lacrosse

One-third of '09 seniors now committed

One-third of Summer Clams have now locked up fall 2010 plans

As we pass the mid-point of August, it is with great pride that I announce that with commitments 16 & 17, the Clam program now has seen one-third of its rising seniors commit to a program for the fall of 2010.

As a coach, nothing suggests a greater level of overall health of a select program than a high number of impressive collegiate placements. Indeed our mission statement as an organization has never been to win all our games or achieve high national rankings (though make no mistake: each is nice!). Rather, our mission statement is help facilitate lacrosse as a device that open collegiate doors that might otherwise remain shut due to financial limitations, academic limitations, or both. In short, we have already put forth very impressive results on that front. And for the 34 remaining players, we are not done yet. I for one cannot wait to continue through the process with our remaining players.

I got wind of commitment #16 not from the player, who called me later the same day, but from the coach. Needless to say, whenever a coach immediately calls you after a player commits, you know he's excited. In this case, it was Coach Thompson at Colby, who called me on his way out of town for vacation to say that Peter Reiley (rising senior goalie, Deerfield) was his guy between the pipes. Peter is another player who was pursued by a number of Ivy and Patriot League schools before ultimately decided to head to a school in what I consider to be the hottest league in the country, the NESCAC.

Commitment #17 must for now remain relatively obscure. The player and his family has opted for me not to post the commitment because the D1 school in question cannot offer "guaranteed" commitments. But in this case, the school has offered their version of a commitment, which is as far as they can go. As soon as I can announce this commitment, I will do so with tremendous pride, as this young man has been with our organization for a very long time, and as far as collegiate placements go, they just don't get much better!
