Three More Clams Commit

Three more Clams, two seniors and a junior, make their college decisions

Yesterday, the first phone call and the last were the two best. Sandwiched in between them was an email that made me every bit as happy.

The first call came on my way into work, when the father of our top Clam goalie coming out of the fall, Conor Fraylick, called to tell me that Conor had decided to accept a generous athletic scholarship offer and attend Fairfield University in the fall of 2011. Though Conor became our second "2011" to commit, he became our first actual junior. (The other, defenseman Petie von Rosenvinge from Weston, committed to UMASS's 2011 despite being a senior now; he is going to take a year off prior to heading to play at UMASS.)

Conor, from Pleasantville NY, found his way to the Clam program through very strong recommendations from several Clams who had played with Conor on another team before becoming Clams themselves. Given the distance and time demands, it was very difficult for Conor to fulfill all the Clam requirements. But he proved both willing and able. And I can say without hesitation to our program is very glad that he was.

Next came an email from Jon Higgins, a defenseman from Nantucket who took the path less travelled in joining the Clams for the first time in the fall of his senior year. While most Clams join the Clams far earlier (and in fact more than half historically come through the Rising Clams first), our door is always open. And when Jon came to try out this past fall, he showed he had what it took.

Somewhere along the way, possibly even prior to coming to the Clams, Jon had garnered interest from D3 powerhourse Stevenson University in Maryland. Wherever and whenever the interest began, it appears to have ended with Jon in a Clam uniform. As Jon's play this fall was enough to finalize their decision.

Interestingly, the final call of the day informing of yet another commitment came from another Clam who joined the ranks in the fall. Eli Hayward, a senior attackman from Ipswich MA, also made the Clam following the fall tryout. And, according to Eli, it was at a local event - the IAS Showcase in Milford NH - where the always-strong Ohio Wesleyan Bishops saw what they needed to see from Eli. After a successful visit to lovely central Ohio, Eli and the Ohio Wesleyan coaching staff worked out the details. And yesterday, Eli got to the good word.

With his decision to attend Fairfield, Conor Fraylick remarkably became the 17th player from this a past summer's squad to commit to a D1 program. In choosing Stevenson and Ohio Wesleyan respectively, Jon and Eli became the first two non-summer Clams so far to choose their paths.

As more and more commitments stream in (and already I'm aware of two others in the works that just need to be finalized), I will get the announcements out as quickly as I'm able. 'Tis the season, and what a season it is!

Below are all the commitments, from this past summer, and from this past fall. As always, our warmest congrats go to all the Clams below, as well as all the Clams gearing to for the '09 spring season that will be upon us before we know it.
