A junior and a senior choose to stay in New England, play for emerging powers in two different divisions
It's an interesting time of year now. On the one hand, the last of our Clam seniors are receiving their acceptances and finalizing their plans for the next four years. And on the other, the juniors - a full year earlier in the process - are beginning to make their commitments. So far, four juniors (or 2011's) have committed to D1 programs.
The Clam program had both of these happen over the past week, though I can say that in the case of the senior, it appears the news is by no means fresh.
Still, we'll start with the senior, in this case standout defenseman Chris Brown from Archbishop Williams. Chris was new to the Clams last summer, but made an immediate splash with the elbow-jarring slap checks and overall powerful style of play. Pursued by a number of D1 schools in addition to D3's, Chris ultimately landed in an emerging hotbed for Clam alumni: Eastern Connecticut State University. In just the past two years, five Clams (Donald Berube, Riley Dobel, Trevor Morrissette, Mike Fanning & now Chris) are headed down to play for Coach Axel. And rumors on the wire are that another Clam who must remain unnamed due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter (I always wanted to say that) may transfer from a D2 power to Eastern Conn, which would make six strong Fighting Clams who will no doubt form the backbone of what will - mark my words - be a powerful D3 program in the coming years.
Then, just this past Sunday, word reached me that our fourth member of the class of 2011 made his commitment. Tanner Powers, a defenseman from the Rivers School, decided his second trip to Burlington would be all the was necessary to decide that UVM was the place for him. Tanner is the first Clam of the 37 who have committed since summer who was not with us this past summer. Tanner put in a little time with Team Central before rejoining the Clams this past fall (before heading to Team Central for a little while, Tanner had been a Rising Clam). Man was it good to have him back.
As alluded to above, the tally of seniors and juniors committed since last summer stands at 37. Scroll down to see all the rest. And, of course, congrats to Tanner and Chris on arriving at their decisions!
