NCAA Champions Crowned

Clam Alumni celebrate Division 1 and Division 3 National Championships

Memorial Day weekend was just that for five former Clams as Duke and Tufts both secured their first Men's Lacrosse National Champhionships.

On Sunday, #6 Tufts took on #2 Salisbury for the Division 3 title.  Jamie Atkins (senior, Middlesex School, midfielder, Clam '04-'05) lead all goal-scorers with a hat-trick in his final game as a Jumbo.  Tufts used a 6-1 first quarter to build a lead they would never relinquish.  Just as impressive as Jamie's offensive outburst was the defensive stand of the Jumbos against the vaunted Salisbury offense.  Sam Gardner (freshman, Phillips Exeter, LSM, Clam '07) helped the Tufts defense hold the Gull's offense to only six goals.  More impressive, Sam helped hold Salisbury's leading scorer (a middie) to only one assist in the contest.  Jamie and Sam were joined in celebration by fellow Jumbos and Clam Alumni Packy Devine (senior, Thayer Acadmey, attack, Clam '04-'05) and Tyler Page (freshman, Phillips Exeter, goalie, Clam '07-'08), both who saw significant time this season to help Tufts reach the champhionship game.

Monday saw all eyes on Duke versus Notre Dame with both teams looking to follow Tufts and claim their first lacrosse national title.  Notre Dame had Clam Alumni Quinn Cully (freshman, Duxbury HS, midfield, Clam '07-'08) as one of their top defensive middies while Duke had Max Quinzani (senior, Duxbury HS, attack, Clam '02-'05), who everyone had their eyes on.  It was Notre Dame that controlled the pace of the game and while the Irish held Max to only one assist, it was Duke that scored the 6-5 win in overtime.  The win caps off a 66-13 overall record for this senior class at Duke and sees Max end his career with 199 goals and 37 assists, but - far more more importantly - a national title.

Congratulations to all the Clam Alumni on a great season!
