KING OF THE HILL ROSTER SESSION 1 (6/23-25)
2013 CLAMS BLUE*
*COMMENTS, RESULTS, ALL STARS & STATS BELOW

Comments: This was event #1 for the '13 Blue's. After our lone practice, we took to the field with some minor kinks still to iron out. And with these early summer events - particularly with younger players - we always say that our main goal is to see steady improvement. And if we're allowed one mulligan (game #4 was one I'm sure we've all forgotten already), this was a team that got steadily better, and played it's very best lacrosse on the final day. 3-2 at a very tough event to start the summer, with 3 players named to the event's prestigious All Star game, certainly isn't a bad way to get rolling.

The team's strength truly was it's defense. With Jared Fong (Weston HS) as our leader between the pipes, and our trio of standout close d-men - Ray Horgan (Deerfield), Ryan Macri (Governors) & Tucker Mathers (St. Johns Prep) - we were in every game save one. And when you throw longstick midfielder George Fay (Loomis Chaffee) in the mix, you had what ultimately proved to be an outstanding defensive corp. that will only get better. As I look back, the scores didn't reflect the prowess of this group, as often times out offense had the fast-forward button pressed down constantly, and as a result our D didn't get ample time to catch their breath. When we possesses just a little, they nearly always shut the door on our opposition.

The offense got better as we went. The clear standout was Johnny McNamara (Brewster), a dynamic lefty finisher who also sees the field well. But complimentary attackmen Dan Mini (St. Johns Prep) & Jordan Fong (Weston) also headed up a unit that, again, made clear strides by tournament's end.

The midfield also progressed, and by the end was playing very good ball. Recent Loyola-commitment Nick Desisto (Rivers) made important contributions on the offensive end, but even more contributions on the defensive end and in transition. And an important decision was made about halfway to run Kevin Murphy (Brewster) at midfield instead of attack (he can do both); once this happened he immediately became an important part of our offensive attack at the midfield. Kevin's stats below only hint at the contributions he will make, as he must have had 5 or 6 shots bang off the pipe throughout the course of the tournament. Strong contributions were also made by the rangy & deceptively fast Jory Makin (Brooks), the always-smooth Tyler Matses (Newburyport), and do-everything workhorse Jack Sharrio (St. Johns Prep).

So now it's onto session 2 of the Rutgers MXP event, where we'll carry with us similar goals, albeit with slightly more emphasis on performance than improvement. For we must recall, even though this will be just our second event of the summer, at the end we'll be halfway, for there are only four in all for the '13 Blues. I for one am very excited for the coming event!

2012 CLAMS BLUE*
*COMMENTS, RESULTS, ALL STARS & STATS BELOW

 Clams 2012 Blue Write Up

The Clams 2012 Blue team had a very successful weekend at King of The Hill Session II. With a strong group of rising seniors, playing their second tournament together, the team gelled early and kept it rolling through out the weekend. Though they suffered a tough defeat in the Semi-Final, the Clams rebounded to Claim 3rd place.

The backbone of the 2012’s, was with out a shadow of a doubt their defense. Led by Dan McDougall’s (Avon Old Farms) take away checks and ground balls, Stephen Iodice’s (Weston HS) vocal leadership, John Reinhardt’s workmen like effort both at close and LSM, the Clams were able stifle the majority of the opposition.

Between the pipes, both Will Ryan and Blair Freidensohn had very good weekends, both ending with save percentages nearing 70%.

From the Midfield, Kyle Soroka was a constant threat from up top, tallying multiple goals off hard splits and working hard off the wings of face-offs. Conor Van Duzer, was the complete midfielder, riding hard, being a treat of offense and being our man down specialist.

At the Face-off X, Joey Lefebvre, dominated for the weekend, not going sub 50% in a single games, and against multiple teams seeing double poles and lock off n the wings.

At attack, Sam Sweet pulled the strings for a very polished unit. Both Jack Rautiola and Conor Helfrich provided quality finishing and were dangerous threats on the man up. As the unit progressed during the weekend, the ball movement and offense was at times downright dynamic.

The next time the 2012 Blue’s will be together will be Tri-State, where they hope to go from strength to strength, and continue the success they achieved this past weekend. As some one who has been involved with many of these teams and tournaments, I feel very confident that this unit will certainly continue to make waves.
