COMMENTS: This tournament really was a fun ride for the Fighting Clams 2013 Blue squad, especially given our coaches' unofficial motto of striving for significant improvement throughout the summer. Coming off a decent start at King of the Hill, where we posted a 3-2 record, we pulled in a couple key contributors missing at KOH, had a 2nd practice where we polished some of the rough edges, and felt ready to roll.

But the first game down at Rutgers left players and parents a little wary. Shaking off the 4th of July proved tough, as we played sluggish, and lost to a Georgia team by one goal. The team got together for a while after that game, reviewed some things, and promised to one another that that would be the last time we played like that. And, ultimately, we upheld that promise.

We started rolling on day 2, and didn't stop until early afternoon on day 3, when there were no more games left to play. During the 6 game winning streak which included our Championship game victory, we outscored opponents 47-18. And, more impressive, we outscored our opponents 45-11 when our starting defensive corp. remained in the game. The team play the squad exhibited was a sight to be behold on both sides of the ball. In short, it was a heck of a run!

When a team gives a complete effort like this team did, it always makes a coach feel conflicted when posting standouts. But, as always, there were some. Attackman and leading scorer Johnny McNamara (Brewster) anchored the attack, though in truth all four of our attackmen made valuable contributions. First line middies Nick Desisto (Rivers, Loyola-commit) and Kevin Murphy (Brewster) were a very dangerous one-two punch, complimented well by the smooth and savvy Tyler Matses (Newburyport). Face-off man+ Elliott Burr (Hamilton-Wenham) was a beast for the entire tournament, and we leaned heavily on him in the face-off X, but also on his very timely offensive output. To single any other midfielders out in a positive way would only lead to singling any un-mentioned's in a negative way, so I'll just say that in addition to the names above, all other middies did their part and then some.

As good as the offense was, it really was our defense that proved to be the proverbial backbone of this team. And in announcing standouts, I truly mean it when I say it's hard to know where to start. Starters Ray Horgan (Deerfield), Tucker Mathers (St. Johns Prep) and Chris Shield (Mansfield) proved to be a stifling back-line for the tournament's duration. And the LSM tandem of Matt Ryan (Phillips Exeter) and George Fay (Loomis) may be the best one-two punch at the LSM position for 2013 teams in the country (I know I'm sounding like a biased "homer", but I sincerely believe this to be true). And, here again, all poles on roster made valuable contributions throughout the tournament.

Between the pipes, newcomer James O'Leary (St. Sebastians) proved to be a pleasant surprise, stopping well over half the shots that came his way, some in spectacular fashion. If nothing else, James cemented his spot as a Blue 2013 goalie for the coming year, espcially encouraging given the fact that, coming into the tournament, he was a relative unknown in the Clam program with much to prove. Welcome aboard, James!
