Below is the schedule and roster for the 2013 Fighting Clams Blue team heading down for the UMBC Shootout, as well as results, comments, and statistics (as always, kept to the best of our ability, and almost certainly with some errors).

UMBC SHOOTOUT
7/24-27
Team Record: 5-2
Tournament Semi-finalist

Comments: This summer was a really special run for a 2013 team that is talented beyond its years, and showed down at the Shootout that it may very well be the top team in its class in the country. Coming off a Championship at the Rutgers MVP Tournament, and then making the Championship game at Tri State (at an event where the team was merged with its Orange counterpart, so only about half our top players were present), hopes and expectations were high coming into the Shootout. But I knew from experience that the Shootout is renowned for chewing up and spitting out younger teams. And to those paying attention to the event's bigger picture, they'd have noticed that this happened to nearly every other team of predominantly 2013's down there, including many who've enjoyed a high level success elsewhere throughout the summer. But not us.

In fact, this was the first year I had the "courage" to bring down a team of rising juniors, and had my reservations when I put this event on the 2013 slate back in the early spring. At that point, I knew our team would be good. But knowing full well the degree of difficulty the Shootout poses year in and year out, I figured anything above .500 would be an achievement.

But following our players throughout their spring seasons, my confidence grew. And by the time I saw the team together, I knew we had something special. Following each others performances at non-Clam events such as Blue Chip, Under Armour, Maverik Showtime only heightened our collective belief in ourselves.

To put our run to the Semi's in perspective, last year's Clam team that made it to the Championship was one year older (so rising seniors). And on it are 12 players who'll either be playing D1 lacrosse in the fall, or are committed to be the following fall. There are 6 players who'll be playing NESCAC ball in the fall. All the others will be playing at strong collegiate programs.

This has to excite anyone who's not only a part of this Clam 2013 team, but indeed anyone who's a fan of the Clam program, or even New England lacrosse. Add to these successes the "reliable" rumors swirling about that suggest we'll have a few of the top players in the country when these rankings come out, and you have a very bright picture painted. We should have players on those lists. This is top of talent of our team has proven itself to have.

But all this said, we did not win the Shootout. And you can say what you will about our youth, and what could've been. At the end of the day, given we didn't attain our ultimate goal, we now must strive to take those final steps to ensure that we will be the top team in our class in the country over the coming year. As I said to the team at the end of the Shootout, we are just a few very small steps away. Already, based in no small part on the clear momentum we have on our side, additional interested players are vying for those few remaining Clam 2013 spots, and indeed a couple difference-makers are already signed on. The successes of this team has my motivation at an almost fever pitch. And over the next year I will not rest until this team solidifies its spot as the top team of its kind, a claim we could make already, but a claim that the coming year will leave no doubt is ours.
