GAIT CUP WRITEUPS

Wrap up for the 2014 A and '15/'16 A teams at Gait Cup.

COMMENTS: The 2014 A and the "15/'16 A teams traveled to historical Gettysburg, PA this past week for the Gait Cup tournament.  The 2014 A team had it's work cut out for them being in what many in attendence believed the strongest pool of teams at the tournement leading up to the playoffs.  Scheduled to play the Alcatraz Outlaws 2014 (CA), Amped 2014 (VA), and CT Hurricanes all before even getting into the playoffs was a tough draw, leading to a 1-3 record in pool play.

But, the playoffs are a new "season", if you will, and behind the play of the team's leading scorer Tucker Mscisz (attack, Pomfret), Joe Cormier (F/O mid, Acton/Boxborough HS) at the face-off X, and strong defensive efforts from Ty Martz (defense, Beverly HS) and Sam Reardon (defense, The Rivers School), the 2014 team made a strong run to the semi-finals, getting a revenge win against the Amped 2014 team and another bracket's top seed Miltia team along the way.

Meanwhile, the '15/'16 A team stumbled in their first game of the tournament against a strong FCA South team in a one-goal loss, but then rattled off three straight wins to secure the number two seed in our pool.  Unfortunately, our first round playoff game pitted us against an athletic, scrappy BamaLax team that had our number, knocking us out of the championship hunt.

The most gratifiying game of the tournament came that night in our consolation game against a CT Panthers team we had already beaten earlier.  The Panthers came out strong, putting us in an early two goal hole, but behind ever-present hustle of "elder" middies JT Kelly (Acton/Boxborough HS), Max Cushman (Loomis Chaffee), and Alex Chin (Shrewsbury HS) plus some timely defensive stops thanks to Gabe Cormier (defense, Acton/Boxborough HS), Will Moriarty (defense, Catholic Memorial HS) and Nathan Masalek (goalie, Marblehead HS), we pulled out a great, poised come-from-behind win to finish the event 4-2.

Note:  Seven Clams were selected to the All Star games: Joe Cormier (2014 midfield, Acton/Boxborough HS), Sam Reardon (2014 defense, The Rivers School), Tyler Boardo (2015 goalie, Tabor Academy), JT Kelly (2015 midfield, Acton/Boxborough HS), Max Cushman (2015 midfield, Loomis Chaffee), Alex Chin (2015 midfield, Shrewsbury HS), Ryan McCaffrey (2015 midfield, The Rivers School, DNP - concussion).
