TOP GUN LACROSSE CELEBRATES ITS 25TH CAMP SEASON

Littleneck Report: Crabs Young Gunz & Devens Tournament

Checking in with the future Clams in the Littlenecks Program.

This past weekend while the Clams were traveling out to Amherst the Littlenecks headed to Baltimore, MD and Devens, MA.

Here's the recap:

2017 AA (ORANGE)

Littlenecks 2017AA (Orange) traveled to Baltimore to play against the best 2017 teams in the country.  They were all there:  the Crabs, the LIE Turtles, The LIE Terps, Mad Lax, the Dukes, West Coast Stars, Georgia Thunder, CT Boltz, the Breakers, etc.  The Littlenecks finished the weekend 3-2 and in 5th place in the field of 14.

The weekend started on a great note with an exciting come from behind OT win over Mad Lax.  Then a tough loss to the LIE Turtles, followed by a strong rebound performance to beat a solid Georgia Thunder team.

On day two the team started flat and went down early to the Dukes (eventual tournament winners).  The 'Necks clawed back but couldn't quite overcome the tough Dukes defense and fell 7-4.  The second game on day two pitted the Neck's against the LIE Terps.  Again the 'Necks bounced back from a tough loss with a well played 5-4 win.

The coaches were unanimous with their tournaments standout team.  Ben Churchill in net with a 71% save percentage, stopped 49 shots and anchored and improving defense, Bailey Laidman lead the offense with 10 points including 3 helpers to build critical involvement from 'Necks strong attack group, Jack Griffith netted 5 and was the standout player in the decisive win over Georgia, new comer Jack Seibert finished the weekend with 2 goals and three assists, Anthony Marinello had a great weekend at close D, LSM and the face off X and Aidan Van Duzer was a force to recon with clearing the ball consistently all tournament. Additional shout outs to Coaches Macri and Burr who did an outstanding job working with these young and talented players.

2017 GREEN

The Littlenecks 2017 Green team finished up at 1-4 this weekend at Devens.  First game the ‘necks fell to a strong Laxachusetts Yellow team 4-9.  They would rebound, however with a very strong showing against CT 203, winning by a score of 8-1. Unfortunately, that would be the only win of the day as the ‘necks fell to talented Laxacusetts Black (1-9), NH tomahawks Purple (1-8), and CT Bulldogs (1-7).

Despite the record the ‘Necks showed promise on D, with bright spots coming from Bobby Leonhardt’s aggressive on ball defense which caused countless turnovers throughout the tournament.  Sam Correnti also stuck out using his big frame to constantly strip his man and recover ground balls.  At attack Kyle Helfrich and Alec Benson showed promise, each by netting a few goals.  Expect the Green squad to improve dramatically as the summer continues.

2018 BLUE

Our newly constituted 2018 Blue team played their first tournament this past weekend at Fort Devens, playing up at the 2017 level.  They faced bigger, stronger players all weekend and did not back down from the challenge!  The two best games of the weekend for the squad came Saturday with a hard-fought 7-6 loss to a strong and physical Cape Cod team, and an 8-5 win against the Tomahawks to close out the tourney on Sunday.  Against Cape Cod, the boys battled back to tie the game with just over a minute left with back to back goals by Eric Civetti, who led the offense with strong play all tournament.  Unfortunately, Cape Cod had the ball last and scored the game winner with only a few clicks left on the clock.

Against the Tomahawks, the boys again battled back, this time from a 3-0 deficit in the first quarter.  Chris Bucking scored three key goals, all assisted by Nick Bevacqua. Middie Jack Meyer played a strong game at both ends of the field as did Nick Sobell, Reed Findlay, and Maclin Fitzpatrick, who won several face-offs in the second half to help secure the victory.  Kudos to Coach Bryan Uva, who helped bring along our defense, led by LSM Kiernan Stone, to play their strongest game against an athletic and fast Tomahawk offense.  Mayo Amorello was strong all weekend between the pipes, the highlight being the game vs. Cape Cod, where he played through a cut to his right knee and won the Necks’ version of a Purple Heart for his, literally, “blood and guts” play!

At 3-2 in the older bracket, it was a strong start and a great learning experience for the 2018 squad!
