TOP GUN FIGHTING CLAMS FALL '13 COACHING STAFF


The Clams are thrilled to have such an exceptional group of coaches for our 2013 Fall Tour.

The Clams program is pleased to announce its exceptional fall coaching staff.  This group includes multiple scholastic and collegiate Captains, All-Americans, All-Conferenece and All-Area award winners.  This group consists of coaches with both playing and coaching experience at the Professional, Division 1, Division 3 and High School/Prep School levels. And in an aspect particularly unique to the Clam program, 8 of the 14 coaches working most regularly with the Clams teams this fall played for the Clam program in high school, a fact we consider to be quite a testament to the longevity of the program, as well as the loyalty of those who have donned the colors.

RONNIE WESTGATE*
2015 “AA” DIRECTOR

Coach Westgate has been a part of Top Gun and the Clams since 1996. He played 4 years at Sandwich High School and joined one of the original Clams teams during his junior and senior year. Ronnie played 4 years as a goaltender at Providence College from '02-'06. During his four years at PC, he served as team captain during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons while the Friars captured 2 MAAC Conference Championships. PC earned its first bids to the NCAA D1 tournament in '04 (vs. Johns Hopkins) and '06 (vs. Hofstra).

After college, Ronnie coached for 5 seasons at Wellesley HS and was part of an undefeated regular season in 2011. He coached the 2012 season at Providence College where he worked with the goaltenders and defense, preparing for Big East opponents like Syracuse, Notre Dame and Villanova.

Ronnie has joined the Clams staff full time and along with handling the operations responsibilities, he is a Head Coach of the 2015  “AA” Clams.

JUSTIN WALKER
PRESIDENT TOP GUN FIGHTING CLAMS

Justin graduated from Tabor Academy in 1995, where he was named as a high school All-American, and where he still holds the school record for points scored in a season (112). He was also named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic lacrosse player and the New England Prep Player of the Year in 1995.

Justin started for all four years at attack at Denison University, and was named as an All NCAC player three times. He was named as an Honorable Mention All-American for his senior season, and scored 182 points during his collegiate career.

After serving as an Assistant Coach for Duxbury High School for two years, one of which was during a season that saw Duxbury won its first State Championship, Justin moved to the Rivers School in 2002 to take over a program that hadn't had a winning season in over two decades. Since taking over, Rivers has gone 113-73, and has not had a losing season since 2005. In 2006, Coach Walker was named as Coach of the Year in ISL, and in 2009 his team was one of three teams winning a share of the ISL title. Justin has coached two high school All-Americans at Rivers, and 35 players who have gone on to play at the collegiate level, including 11 at the Division 1 level.

JOEL DERESHINSKY


Joel grew up in Annapolis, MD and attended Annapolis Area Christian School where he was a two-time All-MIAA and two-time All-Anne Arundel County. He led the county in goals and was second in scoring in 2006, his senior year. He ended his senior year with an MVP of the Senior All-Star game performance.

On the recruiting camp circuit, Joel earned Fab 40 All-Star honors at the Top Star lacrosse camp (2005) and played for FCA Senior National Elite Team (2005).

Joel played indoor box lacrosse in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for the Calgary Jr. A Raiders (2008, 2009) He was a two-time All-Conference at Gordon College, and was drafted to the Kentucky Stickhorses of the NALL (2011). He is currently in the process of trying out for Team Israel, as they get set for the 2014 FIL World Games.

Joel is currently and Assistant lacrosse Coach at Phillips Academy in Andover.

Joel will be the Head Coach of our 2017AA Clam team this fall.  He is also one of our Box Lacrosse specialists at our October box sessions.

RANDY FRASER
Director of Box Lacrosse

Known for his leadership, passion and intensity both on and off the field, Randy Fraser is a true ambassador for the game of lacrosse. With over 30 years of field and box experience, Fraser’s ability to recognize talent and build teams places him amongst the game’s best youth, elite, college and professional coaches in the world.

After a successful career at Springfield College (1986-1990), Fraser established himself as one of the most dominant American box lacrosse players in the country. He amassed over 200 career points in 81 games throughout 13 seasons in the NLL with the Boston Blazers (1991-1997), New York Saints (1998-1999) and Buffalo Bandits (2001-2004). He was also Captain of Team USA (2003), scoring one goal and dishing ten assists at the World Games in Canada, ultimately leading the Team to a Bronze Medal.

Fraser began his coaching career as Assistant Coach for both Dean and American International colleges, and also as Defensive Coach for his alma mater, where he helped lead the Pride to the Division II National Championship in 1994. Professionally, he has enjoyed tenures as Assistant Coach for the Boston Cannons (2006), New York Titans (2006) Boston Blazers (2007-2011) and Team USA (2007 and 2011).

Since 1990, Fraser has been deeply committed to coaching youth lacrosse and elite teams – his lifetime of experience and passion for the game allows him to continue to offer exceptional clinics, camps and private instruction to players of all abilities throughout New England. His passion for the game also affords him the luxury of remaining an active, impactful player in elite adult leagues and summer tournaments around the country.

Fraser hails from Long Island, New York, currently resides in Marlborough, Massachusetts and works in sales and product development for Gait Lacrosse.

JOHN JENNINGS*


John graduated from St. John's Prep in 2009, where he was a three-year starting attackman. As a senior Captain, he helped lead St. John’s Prep to the State Championship game.  In his senior year John earned All-American and All-Scholastic honors, as well as was named the Salem News Player of the Year. John also holds the single-season goals record at St. John’s Prep with 88.

A 2013 graduate from Colby College, John started on attack for four years with the White Mules. He broke Colby’s single-season goals record with 42 goals his sophomore season. He was an All-NESCAC second team selection twice and earned honorable mention All-American and Scholar All-American recognition his senior season.  He was also selected to play in the Division III North/South senior game.

John will spend the majority of his time with the Clams as a 2015AA coach.  He will also be a prominent member of the coaching staff during our Fall/Winter skill sessions.

TANNER POWERS*


Tanner went to The Rivers School and was a four-year varsity player on the lacrosse team. He also started for three of those years at Rivers. During his lacrosse career at Rivers he earned All ISL Honorable Mention his junior year and earned All ISL his senior year. He was a Captain on the lacrosse team and team MVP his senior year, and was selected for the New England Prep East/ West All-Star game. Tanner was also on varsity football and hockey at Rivers. He played for the Top Gun Fighting Clams for three years. He graduated from Rivers in 2011.

During Tanner’s recruitment he decided to go to the University of Vermont. As a freshman, Tanner started for much of his rookie season. Tanner was also selected on the America East Academic Honor Roll. After his freshman year, he decided to transfer and now attends The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester Massachusetts. During his sophomore campaign he started all 15 games and contributed to a greatly improved Patriot League team.

Tanner has volunteered as a coach the past two seasons for the Dover-Sherborn high school Varsity team. He has helped Dover-Sherborn win back-to-back state championships during his time with the team.

Tanner is currently a junior on the Holy Cross team and is a Political Science major.

Tanner will be assisting with our 2015/’16 and 2016/’17 A Clam squads.

TIM O'BRIEN (OB)

Tim O'Brien, or OB, is the Head Coach of the Boys' Varsity Lacrosse team at the Park School in Brookline, MA.. Previously the Head Coach at Shore Country Day School for 19 years where he led them to many undefeated seasons.

For the last 9 years he has been the director of a boy's summer lacrosse camp for grades 2 - 10 at Shore. Tim has also been successfully coaching Fighting Clams and Littlenecks teams for seven years and is a P.E. teacher at Park.

His playing career consisted of three years at Springfield College as a defenseman.

OB is looking forward to a very successful 2013 fall season.

MIKE MONTENEGRO

Mike was a 3 time Captain (2003-2005) at Tolland High School in Tolland, CT. In his senior year, Mike earned All-Conference All-State and All-Area (Hartford Courant) 2005.  He also participated in the CT North/South Senior All-Star Game.

From there, Mike went to play lacrosse at Gordon College from 2007-2010. While there he was named Captain in both 2009 and 2010, and in 2008 helped lead a defense that ended the year 15th in DIII in goals against (7.07).

After graduating, Mike took over the Assistant Coaching duties at Marblehead High School in 2011.  In 2013, Mike helped coach the Magicians to a school record 17 wins; including Marblehead’s first ever North East Conference Championship in lacrosse.  He is currently an Assistant Coach at The Rivers School

Mike joined the Clams as an Assistant Coach with the 2013 Clams in the summer of 2011. Mike will be coaching with the 2016's and 2017's during the 2013 Fall tour.

BRENDAN GILL*

Brendan Gill attended Chelmsford High School, where he was a three year varsity starter, a three time All-Conference first team, team MVP, team Captain, and was named to the Eastern Mass All-Stars. Also while at Chelmsford, he was selected to the first team All-Conference for football and name Captain for his senior year. Brendan was a long time member of the Top Gun Fighting Clams, and has been a summer camp counselor for Top Gun as well.

After graduating from Chelmsford H.S. Gill attended Bridgton Academy in Maine for the 2006-07 year, and was named the team MVP. After his PG year, Gill attended Towson University to play Division 1 Lacrosse. Gill spent one year at Towson before transferring to Salem State University. At Salem, Gill was a three time member of the Little East All-Conference team. He was also named the Little East Player of the Year in 2010, and in 2011 was #1 in the nation in save percentage. Gill was awarded Salem’s Most Valuable Player in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and was a team captain in 2010 and 2011. After the 2011 season, Gill was named to the NEILA East-West Collegiate All-Star game.

After college, Gill joined the Lasell college men's lacrosse staff in 2011. He served as the Defensive Coordinator for two seasons. In 2013 he was picked up by the Boston Cannons of the MLL as a practice squad member.

Brendan earned his bachelor's degree in economics with a minor in pre-law studies at Salem State University, and currently enjoys a career as a commercial real estate consultant for Structure Consulting Group in Arlington.

Brendan will be working predominately with our 2015/’16 A Clam squad this fall.

KEITH HUGHES “BIRD”


A native of western Massachusetts, Hughes was an All-American lacrosse player for Minnechaug Regional high school in Wilbraham, Ma in 1995.  Hughes left Minnechaug as the all-time leader in goals scored, while also leading western Mass in scoring as a senior. Hughes was a two time all western Mass 1st team selection in 94 and 95.

Hughes went on to play lacrosse and hockey at SUNY Potsdam.  At Potsdam, Hughes was a 2x All-SUNYAC 1st team selection in lacrosse (98, 2000) while also leading his team in scoring in 2000.  Hughes was also the leading scorer for the SUNY Potsdam hockey team in 1999.

Hughes took over as Head Coach of the Universtiy of Rhode Island Club team in 2010.  He stayed on as the Head Coach for 3 seasons.  He then spent time as an Assistant Coach at Wheaton College in 2013.

Hughes works as a sales representative for  Gait & deBeer Lacrosse. He will be coaching predominately with the 2015AA clam group.

MATT RYAN*

Matt is currently a freshman at Harvard, and enters ranked as the No. 22 recruit in the class of 2017 by Inside Lacrosse, A graduate of Phillips Exeter, Matt was selected as a senior Captain and earned four Varsity letters in lacrosse. As a junior, Matt helped Phillips Exeter to 20 wins, the most victories in school history. Matt also led Phillips Exeter to a runner-up finish in soccer in the New England Class A tournament in 2012.

Matt left Phillips Exeter as a two-time U.S. Lacrosse All-American and an Under Armour Senior All-American North selection.

Matt will be working primarily with our 2016AA group this fall.

ELLIOT BURR*

Elliot played 4 years of Varsity lacrosse at Hamilton-Wenham High School in Wenham, MA. As a senior team Captain, Elliot set the Hamilton-Wenham single-season scoring record with 101 points (61 goals, 40 assists) in 2012.  Elliot finished his scholastic career with a school-record 180 points (110 goals, 70 assists) and was a three-time all-league selection.

Elliot attended Syracuse as face-off specialist for the orange seeing time in 4 games.  Last year he played in the 2013 National Championship against Duke University.

Elliot has since transferred to upstart Boston University, he will be a member of the 2014 Terrier lacrosse team.

Elliot will be working predominately with the 2017AA lacrosse team this fall.

JIMMY MURPHY*



A four year letterwinner in both lacrosse and soccer at Brewster Academy, Murphy Captained the lacrosse team as a senior in 2011. In 2011, Murphy helped lead Brewster to a Lakes Region Championships (his second) and an impressive overall record of 15-1. As a senior, Murphy compiled 26 points on 13 goals and 13 assists en route to NNELL All-League First Team accolades. Murphy was also selected to play in the New England Prep East/West All-Star game.

After high school Murphy chose to play Division 1 lacrosse at the University of Hartford.  Murphy is currently a junior, majoring in marketing at Hartford.

Jimmy will be working with various Clam teams this fall.

ERIC SLINGERLAND*

 

Eric graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 2010, where he started on both the soccer and lacrosse teams for four years and co-captained both teams his senior year. He was a two-time high school All-American in lacrosse and named an Under-Armour All-American after his senior year. He was ranked the #43 incoming freshman recruit by Inside Lacrosse. He was a three time Eastern All-New England selection, a New England Senior All-Star game selection and holds the Phillips Exeter Academy career record in points by a midfielder.

In soccer, Eric was the New England Prep School Most Valuable Player his senior year, was a New Hampshire Prep First Team All-Star twice, Boston Globe All-Scholastic and he set the single-single season and career goal scoring record. He spent one year as a member of the Region I Olympic Development Program.

A senior now at Harvard University, Eric has started on the varsity lacrosse team since his sophomore year. He walked onto the varsity soccer team his sophomore year and played both soccer and lacrosse during his sophomore and junior years. He looks forward to his last season playing for the Harvard Crimson.

Eric will be working predominately with our 2016AA Clams this fall.

THEODORE “TEDDY”   BASCOM*

A former Clam,   Bascom was a 3-year starter on defense for Lincoln Sudbury.  While at LS, Bascom and his teammates   amassed an impressive 52-11 record; this included 3 straight MIAA State   Semi-final finishes.  After graduation,   Bascom spent a PG year at Phillips Academy in Andover.  At Andover, Bascom was selected as an   East/West New England Prep All-Star. Teddy also played for two years as Fighting Clam in high school.

Bascom went on to   attend Trinity College were he starred for the Bantams.  A 3 year starter and senior Captain, Bascom   left Trinity as a 2 Time All-NESCAC, All-New England, 2nd Team   All-ECAC, Pre-Season Honorable Mention All-American, 3rd Team   All-American selection.  Bascom was   also selected to the DIII North/South Senior All-Star game and the DIII NEILA   East/West Senior All-Star game.

Bascom will predominately   work with the 2017AA Clams this falll.
