It was like paddling in front of a breaking wave. The snow was coming, and coming fast.  Could we finish our CELL business before it spoiled the party?

Our final three teams AB, Winged River 1 and the Flyin’ Lions were scheduled to play a championship round robin at 2 pm.  The snow started at noon.  We called the three teams in for an earlier 1 pm start.  Then the race was on.

In the first game, Winged River 1 traded goals for most of the game.  But in the end Sam Witt (5 goals, 2 assists) was too much to contain.  AB (15) Winged River (10).  Riley Van Duzer led the scoring for Winged River 1 (3 goals, 1 assist).  Ben Churchill (Princeton commit) notched eight saves in the abbreviated contest.

Before the game both captains – Sam Witt and Ben Churchill -  approached me with a proposal to change the schedule.  “Could we have the winner of this game stay on so if they win again, you’ll have your Champion?”  It meant we’d have a chance to wrap up before the teeth of the storm sunk in.  It also meant one team would go home with just one game.  Sensibilities prevailed.  And so Game Two became a potential Championship, and the last Winter CELL game.

With AB in the driver’s seat, they faced a feisty, but depleted Flyin’ Lions team.  This time it was Brown commit Eric Raguin who led the way for AB with 5 goals and 2 assists.  Tim Fenniman did his part stopping 8 shots in 15 minutes before leaving the game for Jake Northcutt.  Despite Flyin’ Lions’ hat tricks from Jake Lendel and Thatcher Adams, AB wins the game 12-7, and thus the Championship.

With these two games yesterday, Winter CELL ends up with 164 games without a forfeit.  With the schedules all young athletes have these days, with the Patriots on a take-no-prisoners tear (an enticing distraction) and with Sunday supposed to be “a day of rest”, 164 consecutive games without a single forfeit is nothing short of amazing.  So thank you CELL players!  See you in the fall.
