Clam commitments are coming so fast now that it's hard to keep up, and admittedly I'm well behind on announcing these two. But certainly better late than never.
Clam long-stick middie Jeff Dube from St. Johns Prep is heading south of the mason-dixon and has committed to the perenially strong Roanoke Maroons for the '10-'11 year. I must admit this one came as a little bit of a surprise, as I had Jeff pegged as another in "NESCAC'er" (and in fact he was heavily recruited by Connecticut College, among other schools). But I love that Jeff has chosen the path less taken, especially among New England players, in heading down south to blaze his own trail. If no other Mass. players join the ranks alongside Jeff, it appears he will be the only player from our state to play for Roanoke when he gets there. I know I speak on behalf of the entire Clam coaching staff when I say that Jeff will do very well down there, and that Coach Pilat and staff are certainly getting a good one in young Mr. Dube.
Summer Clam commitment #22, interestingly, also comes from a player heading south of the mason-dixon line. Fellow long-stick middie Miles Loring-Thomas chose St. Mary's over another Maryland eastern shore school, Washington College, and - a much closer to home option - UVM. Miles will become only the second Mass. player at St. Mary's; the other, also a former Clam, is J.J. Strombosky, a goaltender from Westford who attended the Rivers School.
On behalf of the entire Clam coaching staff, I want to send a sincere congrats to both Jeff and Miles. There's always a little added pressure when you go it alone, so to speak, and embark on a journey that lacks the comfort that comes with familiarity. But these two young men have what it takes to excel wherever they head, and Roanoke and St. Mary's are indeed lucky to have them both!
