It was an interesting second weekend of the summer 2010 tour for the Top Gun Clam program. I guess it's safe to say in our pursuit of excellence, we went two for three.
The show-stealers were the Rising Clams. Competing in their second weekend in a row, and now with two practices under their belt, the Rising Clams posted a convincing 4-0 record at the Harvard tournament on Saturday in Cambridge. As much a defensive statement as an offensive one, the Rising Clams outscored their opponents 28 - 9 over the course of the day. Standout goaltender Will Ryan was complemented very well by Nick Bain between the pipes; the defense - led by juggernaut Matt Ryan but with outstanding play by all - played with wreckless abandon throughout; and the offense, led by top scoring attackmen Kevin Murphy & Will Jennings, a very well balanced midfield group, and the dominant face-off play of Elliott Burr, looked for most of the day like a well-oiled machine. (STATS & GAMES SCORES BELOW)
The other group that played very well were the King of the Hill Fighting Clams. Posting a 4-1 record at one of the nation's most competitive team events, the Clams caught a tough break that kept them out of the playoffs. In their bracket, they were one of two undefeated teams going into the playoffs. So it came down to margin of victory. And hence, into the consolation bracket we went due to a slightly smaller margin of victory (a tough pill to swallow). And after a let-down game that ended in a close defeat, the Clams got back on the horse and won their final game to get out of town with a strong performance all told.
The game stats are on their way back from Philly as I write this, and they will be posted upon the coach's return, alongside a bit more of an in-depth report. (SEE BELOW TOMORROW FOR STATS & SCORES)*
*Our special congratulations go out to our King of the Hill All Stars. Reports from several college coaches viewing the game from the sidelines said our five players played very hard, and represented the program very well. Below are the five Fighting Clam King of the Hill All Stars, as selected by the college coaches in attendance:
Will Ballantyne, 2011, Hopkinton HS
Conor Fraylick, 2011, Pleasantville HS (NY)
Joe Ricciuti, 2012, Norwell HS

Bringing up the rear a bit from an overall performance were the Harvard Fighting Clams. Posting an 0-2-2 record, all agreed afterward that this was a team that did not fulfill expectations. With more than half of these Clams making the jump from "Rising" status this past fall, one cannot deny they were thrown into the fire a bit, squaring off against some tough opponents that seemed to have the edge in both age and time spent together. But as I write this, it seems to ring in my ears as an excuse, and I do not mean for it to. While our teams are re-shuffled at each event they attend, many of these same players will be together again this coming weekend at the New England Team Showcase in Devens, MA. We will right the ship.
