The 2010 Fighting Clam Summer Tour in review
The other day I heard that the summer of 2010 has thus far been the hottest on record. I can personally attest that out on the recruiting circuit, it sure felt like it. And I didn't play one second of one game - I can only imagine what the players felt. So before going any further, all the Clams who played for us this summer should be commended for their effort and persistence in the midst of what were often trying conditions.
When viewed in its entirety, the Clam summer was a bit of a roller coaster ride. But certain groups were outstanding throughout.
When looking at the positive, one must start with the elder Fighting Clams. The group that attended the Rutgers, King of the Hill & Brine/UMBC Shootout events was a group that remained larglely intact (nearly the entirely our 2011's). And during that time, this group compiled an impressive overall record of 16-4. At King of the Hill, the Clams missed the playoffs despite going undefeated in pool play because the tie-breaker went to goal differential, and apparently we had not beaten up on teams enough to advance. Still, we went 5-1 overall. And in the King of the Hill All Star game, regarded as one of the most coveted of the summer, five of our players, Matt Thistle, Joe Ricciuti, Will Walker, Will Ballantyne & Conor Fraylick, were selected as participants. At the Brine/UMBC Shootout, the Fighting Clams compiled a 7-2 record during their run that led all the way to the Championship game. And while we dropped to C-ship to a very strong Calvert Hall team, it should be noted that we has bested this team earlier in the tournament, proving that the squad we brought down to Baltimore could hang with anyone the event threw at us.
When the elder and the younger Fighting Clams were mixed, the results were mixed. At the Dartmouth event held at Devens, the Fighting Clams posted a respectable 4-2 record. Fighting Clam All Stars at Dartmouth included Derek Youngman, Chase Williams, Pete Willauer, Charlie Suominen, Ray Horgan, George Fay & Ben Lesser. And at Tri State, one mixed squad - our Blue team - got away with a winning record at 4-3, and played well throughout. the Orange squad, also mixed between 2011 & 2012's, had a tougher tournament; riddled with injuries and bad luck, this squad limped to an 0-6 record (four starters injured and four one goal losses led us to believe this group was just snake-bit).
Fighting Clam teams comprised of younger players lost more than they won. But before going into specifics, a bit about this squad. Unlike some area select groups, this summer I chose to throw our younger players against the toughest, oldest competition tournaments had for them. While in the short term this led to some frustration, I fully believe that this decision will benefit these players in the long run, starting this fall. At one of these younger events, the Harvard Crimson Classic, the Fighting Clam team grinded their way to an 0-2-2 record. And at our season-ending Hotbeds event, the team fought their way to a 4-6 record. Again this time struggled with close losses; at this event, all three one goal losses went the way of our opponents. At the Hotbeds All Star game, another big one, FC's Tommy Rehnert & Johnny McNamara got the nod.
Add it all, and its a 28-23-2 record for the entire Fighting Clam program. At the three events that had All Star games, our Fighting Clam teams had twelve separate players honored. And so far seven of our players have committed to D1 programs, with another several deciding between commitments as I write this.
On the whole, it was a solid summer for the Fighting Clams. And with some of the experience gained out on the road, I firmly expect the coming season to be even better than its predecessor.
