Beginning late last week, the commitment process has heated up for our program. Overall, five players are right on the cusp of committing to division one programs. And two from last summer's team have decided to move forward and commit. I plan to share with you updates on the several that are planning to move forward as soon as I receive these updates. But first, let's focus on the two outstanding commitments that I've been made aware of over the past couple weeks.
First, it was standout Pingree attackman Colin Rossano who decided to take his services south of the mason/dixon line, committing to D3 power Roanoke College. Though not a particularly common destination for our Fighting Clams, Colin knew from his first visit that it was the place for him. Colin will join Fighting Clams long stick midfielder Jeff Dube, a standout for last year's Mass. State Champions St. Johns Prep. Colin becomes the fourth attackman from last year's top squad to commit, joining three other D1 commitments Will Walker (Harvard), Jimmy Murphy (Hartford) and Matt Thistle (Manhattan).
Then word of the third commitment arrived this past Friday, saying that Duxbury's Paul Hellar has committed to Fairfield University. Paul played for the Fighting Clams at the King of the Hill event and the UMBC Shootout this past summer, and logged some productive minutes. Coach Copelan and I spoke about Paul just a week or two ago, and it certainly sounds like he liked much of what he saw of Paul this past spring for Duxbury HS, and to an extent with us in the Clams orange and blue (injury hampered much of Paul's time at the Shootout). Paul will join a small army of Clams down at Fairfield. Freshmen Jordan Greenfield & Geordie Carrick (Rivers) & Frankie Wheeler-Larusso (Catholic Memorial) are each making their mark this fall. Reports have it that Greenfield has a shot at starting as a freshman, and that Carrick also appears positioned to see significant time during year one with the Stags. And next fall, standout goaltender Conor Fraylick (Pleasantville NY) will join the boys in CT; coaches have high hopes for Conor between the pipes - and they should.
Colin, & Paul become commitments #17 & #18 from last summer's teams. And with their D1 commitments here in early November, Paul committed to a D1 program earlier than any other previous Clam. Our previous "earliest commits" happened last year to Eric Slingerland from Phillips Exeter (G'town, late November) and Will Walker from Phillips Andover (Duke, December); each de-committed and is now going to Harvard.
