The spate of verbal commitments over the past week illuminate the extremes of the recruiting process
The college recruiting process is, in many ways, wild and getting wilder. Just this past Saturday, I had my initial college talk with college sophomores, prepping how the the process goes, and what they can expect. I really thought I'd gotten out well ahead of it. Then, less than two days and a few exchanges later, one of my sophomores has verballed to UVA, becoming the earliest commitment the Clam program has seen by several months, and also one of the country's earliest. Guess it's time to meet with the 2015's!
Anyway, the sophomore is Tyler Breen, who attends Taft. And in the interest of full disclosure, the Clam program really just batted cleanup with Tyler's commitment. Tyler had previously played with Team Central, another competitive program who the Clams respect and have competed against for years. Talented Coach and Program Director John Middleton led "TC" for years, and had always been a remarkable advocate for all his players, including Tyler. Recently, Coach Middleton has removed himself from Team Central due to some health concerns. And due to his players' allegiance to Coach Middleton, some reconsidered their club team options. Tyler was among those who did this. And having coached Tyler's brother Ryan, who is now playing at Michigan, the Breen's decided the make the switch to the Clams. While we are very glad he did, we as an organization want to extend our congratulations and thanks to Coach Middleton, whose efforts were instrumental in facilitating Tyler's commitment to UVA. And, more importantly, we'd like to congratulate Tyler, and the entire Breen family.
At UVA, Tyler will join junior midfielder Blake Riley, a former Clam who played his high school ball at Governors Academy. More on Tyler's commitment can be found here: http://insidelacrosse.com/news/2011/10/11/recruiting-roundup-2014-breen-virginia-syracuse-cornell-georgetown-villanova-etc
We skip two years to get to our next commitments. Three came to me this past weekend. A fourth found its way to me a couple weeks ago, but I've yet to post on this page.
First, to reiterate what we'd previously posted on our facebook page, Stephen Iodice (Weston HS, 2012) verball committed to D2 St. Anselm. Stephen will join fellow Clam freshman attackman Geoff Kennedy (Gloucester HS) up in southern NH. (I feel it is also important to note here that our own Troy Peters played at St. A's in the late 90's, where he is still considered one of the best goaltenders to play for the program.)
The last three commitments have each landed in the last couple days, and involve a couple more of our standout 2012 defenseman. First by a few hours was John Tocchio (Hingham HS), who, after a whirlwind visit decided to commit to Colorado College while on site. Then, just two days later, standout goaltender Chase Murphy (Taft) did the same. Under new coach Sean Woods, the Tigers are recruiting aggressively out of the Clams program this fall, and may indeed grab a couple other talented players before all is said and done. But Jeff & Chase have been the first to jump in the pool, and will form the cornerstone of what will be one heck of a 2012 defensive class! Understandably, Coach Woods couldn't couldn't be happier with his two most recent commits.
The next commitment, likely one of two in our 2012 class*, is defenseman/LSM Taber Tyrrell (Andover HS). And his commitment is to the Ithaca Bombers. Taber, a tenacious defenseman, who went out to Ithaca and fell in love with it, as many do. In my 10+ years of doing this, in which we've sent two All Americans and just shy of a dozen Clams to Ithaca, I have yet to hear back from one that doesn't love it there. And I can't see why it would start now.
*The one other would like not to announce his commmitment in advance of applying...understandable.
Our congratulations go out to Tyler, Stephen, John, Chase, and Taber! Below are the rest of the commitments from this summer's Clam teams, including Tyler B., who will play with us from this point on:
