This past weekend, the Clam program had it tenth player commit D1, by far the largest number at this point in the process. In fact, with Sam Tenney's commitment to the High Point Panthers, the 2013 Clams have now exceeded the number of D1 commitments in the entire 2012 class. (Though, to the 2012 class's credit, there were a number of players with D1 offers who instead chose strong D3 schools/programs...nothing wrong with that in our eyes!).
Sam's path was interesting, and more circuitous than many others. It included a move from Blue (now "AA"), to Orange (now called "A"), and then - due to dramatic strides Sam made as a player - a move back up to "AA" where he has become a prominent contributor at the attack position. Sam's process in the Clam program displays very clearly the in-program mobility, both upward and downward.
Sam never wavered, and took ownership of his own improvement - a testament to both his work ethic and mental toughness. And in addition to taking advantage of a variety of Clam offerings, Sam also supplemented his participation with our program with events outside our umbrella of offerings. And Sam may have made no bigger splash than with last summer's Under Armour underclassmen games' New England squad, which ultimately took home that event's Championship.
Sam played plenty of ball this past winter too. In addition to a full slate of Clam events, Sam went to a number of college-specific winter Showcases, which are becoming the latest recruitment trend. It was at such an event at High Point this past week where Sam apparently made an immediate splash, prompting a sideline text from a member of the High Point staff to me stating "REALLY like Sam Tenney!". A day layer, Sam was committed, showing how the process can move both really slow, and - if the stars align - really fast.
Sam becomes the 10th Clam since last summer to commit to a D1 program, and the 9th who will be playing in at least one Clam event this summer. Below are the nine 2013 Clams how committed to D1 programs who will joining us this summer:
