     Title: Clams 2014 class's D1 commitments hit three-year high

Total number of D1 commitments in '14 class surpasses total number from previous two seasons; highest number ever this early in process

With AJ Vazquez, Colin Orr, Brendan Gates and Max Gustafson's recent commitment to University of Hartford, Colgate University, the University of Hartford and Brown respectively, the total number of commitments in the Fighting Clams very talented class has risen to 15, surpassing the total from each of the previous two seasons. It has also reached this high a number earlier than at any point in the program's history. Last year, at this point in the 2013 class's recruitment, we had seen a total of 9 players commit to D1 programs; the year prior, we had seen 6.

Based on the way the class's process is trending, we anticipate at least a few more players making their commitment to a D1 program prior to the start of their spring season. (To keep up with our commitments as they occur, track us on facebook and Twitter.) Overall, we are confident this class will exceed the second-highest total the Clams program has ever seen, the class of 2010, which saw 17 total Clam go to D1 programs. That group included such standouts as Hakeem Lecky (Duxbury HS/Avon Old Farms), who is slated as a starting midfielder this year at Syracuse for the second straight year (click here for his mention as part of Syracuse Pre-season Preview: HERE), Luke Duprey (Phillips Andover), who is expected to start at LSM for the Duke Blue Devils, as well as defensemen Pat Hart (Martha's Vineyard HS) and James Fahey (St. Johns Prep, click here for his mention as part of UMASS Pre-season Preview: HERE), who both have a very good shot at starting defensively for Army and UMASS respectively this coming spring.

We also think the class's number of D1 commitments may threaten the all-time high of 21 D1 commitments set in 2007. The 2007 class, generally regarded as our best ever, included Duke All-American and Cannons standout Max Quinzani (Duxbury HS), Hartford All-American and current Rochester Rattler/Charlotte Hound/Rockhopper (and Clam Coach) Tim Fallon (Lawrence Academy), multiple-time Holy Cross leading scorer and NCAA National Champion runner-up with Notre Dame, where he played as a grad student for year, Edison Parzanese (Martha's Vineyard HS), and standouts Mark Goodrich (Rivers/Johns Hopkins), Tim Bigelow (Rivers/Northfield Mt. Mermon/Hobart), Chris Nixon (Duxbury HS, Georgetown), Matt Fuchs (Duxbury HS/Yale), Evan O'Brien (Rivers/Phillips Exeter/Vermont), Jeff Brown (Cohasset HS/Denver), each of whom started at least two years at their respective college program.

Below quick recap of our the Clam program's D1 commitments in the past month, and a list of the top Clam classes in terms of overall D1 commitments in the program's storied eleven years in existence.

Most recent D1 commitments in 2014 class

AJ Vazquez, Belmont Hill (Mass.) has committed to University of Hartford.  AJ joined the 2014 AA Clam team in the Fall of 2012 and travelled with the team to the Fall Crimson Classic (Harvard), the Mid-Fall Classic (UMass), and the Philly Showcase.  AJ also went to the Philly Showcase Individual day and had a stand-out day.  AJ is a starting midfielder for Belmont Hill and is also a Varsity soccer player in the fall.  AJ was also considering Lafayette, Fairfield, and Vermont.

Colin Orr, The Rivers School (Mass.) has committed to Colgate.  Colin is a member of the 2014 AA Clams team that traveled to the UMBC Shootout, Gait Cup, and Hofstra Blue & Gold Tournaments during the summer of 2012 and the UMass Mid-Fall Classic, Harvard Fall Crimson Classic, and both the individual day and team day of the Philly Showcase in November of 2012. During those tournaments, Colin posted went 209 out of 302 at the face-off “X”, posting a 69.2% win percentage and leading the team in ground balls at every tournament. Colin has been the starting face-off midfielder for the Rivers School as well as the starting nose-tackle for the Varsity Football team.  Colin was also considering Army and Hartford among other schools.

Brendan Gates, The Rivers School (Mass.) has committed to the University of Hartford.  As a
member of the 2014 AA team, he traveled to King of the Hill, Gait Cup, and the Hofstra Blue & Gold Tournament during the 2012 Summer Tour.  Brendan's play at King of the Hill earned him a spot in the event's All-Star game. During the 2012 Fall Tour, Brendan was at the UMass Mid-Fall Classic, Harvard Fall Crimson Classic, and Philly Showcase (both the team day and the individual event).  Brendan has been a Varsity midfielder for the Rivers School since his freshman year, and a starter since his sophomore year.  He is also a Captain for both the Varsity football team and the lacrosse team as a junior, and is schedule to be a Captain for both sports again as a senior. Brendan also considered Holy Cross, Drexel, Lafayette and Boston University.

Max Gustafson, D, Belmont Hill (Mass.) has committed to the admissions process at Brown. This past summer he competed as a member of the Top Gun Fighting Clams 2014 AA team at the Brine Shootout at UMBC, King of the Hill and Gait Cup, among other events. Max led all defensemen in total number of ground balls at the Brine Shootout, and was an All Star at both King of the Hill and Gait Cup. This fall he continued on with the Clams, playing at the UMASS Mid-Fall Classic, the Harvard Crimson Classic and the Philly Showcase; Max led all defensemen in GB's at UMASS and in Philly. Max is also a very talented quarterback on Belmont Hill's football team, where he will be a Captain as a senior. Max also considered Syracuse, Fairfield and Holy Cross among others schools.

Andrew Gallahue, A, St. John's Prep (Mass.) has verbally committed to Villanova. Currently a junior, the Fighting Clams member has decided to reclassify to the class of 2015. As a sophomore, he tallied 34 goals and 18 assists before missing the summer with an injury. This fall, he attended UMass Mid-Fall Classic, Crimson Classic and Philly Showcase.  While Andrew played well at both UMass and Harvard, it was his performance at the Philly Showcase Team Day where he truly shined, leading the team with six goals.  That performance put Andrew into the leading scorer's position for the 2014 AA team in the fall.  Gallahue strongly considered Drexel, Lafayette and Villanova.
Austin Gaiss, A/M, Phillips Andover (Mass.) has verbally committed to the University of Notre Dame. This past summer he competed as a member of the Top Gun Fighting Clams 2014 AA team at the Brine Shootout at UMBC and King of the Hill among other events, and this fall he continued on with the Clams, playing at the UMASS Mid-Fall Classic, the Harvard Crimson Classic and the Philly Showcase.  At the Philly Showcase Individual day, Austin was select as an All-Star.  In the All-Star game, Austin posted an assist, continuing to make an impact right up to the end of the day. Austin also considered Brown, Penn and Colgate among others schools.
