TEAM RECORD: 4-2 (Semi-finalist)
OVERALL SUMMER RECORD: 18-4
COMMENTS: This 2014 AA team continues to prove that it is one of the best in the country with another semi-final appearance at an extremely competitive Philly Summer Showcase. We were able to take control early in the tournament with two convincing wins against the New England Storm and Team 1763.
Our first test was against a strong Team Carolina, a team that had throttled our 2014 A team only a week before at UMass. The game was a good, old fashioned defensive battle. Then with under a minute, after Team Carolina had tied the game, we gained possession after a great save from goalie Rob Shaw (Roxbury Latin), moved the ball up-field to our attack where the ball found Danny Seibel's stick (Belmont Hill/Villanova). As all top players want, Danny wanted to take his man and did just that - missing the low off-side corner, but Tyler Breen (Taft/Virginia) was smartly at the endline for the backup and the quick restart with 10 seconds to go. Catching his defender a little flat-footed, Tyler drove hard to the crease, diving and scoring without landing in the crease: win 4-3!
This game was the first of four games in a row that were some of the best games to watch that I've been a part of. The next morning we found ourselves in a tough game with the Long Island Outlaws, dropping the contest 3-5. Luckily, because of our great start, the loss didn't keep us out of the playoffs, where we were given a #1 seed.
Our first round match-up was an old regional opponent: the NH Tomahawks. As are almost every one of the our contests, this was evenly matched with multiple lead changes. At the end, it was Tyler Breen with the game winner. With under two minutes to go, after Brendan Gates had a beautiful catch and roll dodge move to his left, followed by a lefty shot to tie the game, Breen then stuck the beatiful game winner on a come-from-behind righty sweep.
Our semi-final game was against a strong SweetLax team from upstate NY. Unfortunately we came up short, 4-5, in what was another tight contest despite attack Danny Seibel being involved in every goal we scored (3,1) and FOM Collin Orr (The Rivers School - Colgate) going a remarkable 10 for 10 at the face-off "X".
The 2014 AA team finishes the summer with an 18-4 record, two semi-finals appearances (UMBC Shootout & Philly Summer Showcase) and two undefeated tournaments records (Harvard Crimison Classic & UMass Mid-Summer Classic). The evolution of the team from their first tournament as Clams in the fall of 2010 to now has been great to be a part of.
Congratulations and great job, gentlemen.
