Squads rallies after a subpar start for a strong finish
Event Record: 4-4
Overall Summer 2013 Team Record: 20-8
The 2015AA Clams hit the road once again to compete at the UMBC Shootout, one of the most competitive team events on the summer circuit. Although we were not ecstatic about a .500 finish, this group came together throughout the weekend and showed they were not going down without a fight – eventually stringing together 4 wins in a row. For the first time all Summer, the ‘15AA Clams dropped their first 3 games of an event, earning losses against Team Washington, and national powers Loyola-Blakefield and DeMatha. Sporadic offense and some poor decision making led to 3 L’s but we knew this group would rebound.
In game four, a double overtime victory against Penn Charter, Brooks Tyrrell (Marblehead HS) buried the game-winner and the Clams were back on track. Stephen DeLeo (Moses Brown HS) and Foster LeBoeuf (Phillips Andover/Brown) both tallied 2 goals in the win over Penn Charter. Goalies Josh Kirson (Rivers) and Henry Donnellan (Newton South) combined for 14 saves in the tilt and Will Richardson (Groton School) was 10-for-11 at the faceoff X. Richardson’s effort in this game was no anomaly – he was fantastic through the entire event, winning 68% of the 95 draws he took at UMBC.
The rising Junior Clams were able to iron out the issues and took wins in the next three games against Severn School, HHL & Team Denver. Josh Kirson (Rivers) was very strong in the cage and tallied 23 saves over the four-game winning streak. The highlight of the weekend was an excellent come-from-behind victory over the Severn School. The ‘15AA Clams trailed 4-3 at the half and rallied to an impressive 8-5 win behind 4 goals from Jake Foster (Westborough HS) and 3 assists from fellow midfielder Henry Behrens (’16, Phillips Exeter). Will Richardson secured a dozen FO wins against Severn.
The most convincing Clam win was a 7-2 victory over Team Denver on Tuesday evening. Mikey Harris (Hyde School) notched a hat trick and James Burr (Middlesex) and Foster LeBoeuf (Phillips Andover/Brown) both contributed 2 goals apiece.
Ryan Caley (Governors/Colgate), TJ Noonan (Wellesley HS) and Connor Rayfield (Hill School) played very well in front of Kirson and Donnellan. Midfielder Angus O’Rourke (St. Sebastian’s) played excellent SS defense.
The ‘15AA Clams, who have compiled an impressive 20-8 record thus far, will wrap up the Summer ’13 campaign at the Battle of the Hotbeds this weekend at University of Delaware.
